Entergalactic: A Psychedelic Feast for Your Eyes

by Lethbridge Polytechnic

“Entergalactic” is a rom-com about the life of an up and coming graphic artist named Jabari (voiced by Kid Cudi) who is just getting his first taste of real success. Jabari has recently moved to Manhattan after he gets his dream Job at a company called Cosmic Comics, where he will be publicizing his designed character Mr. Rager.

In a city known for being one of the hardest places to meet new people, Jabari navigates his way around old relationships creeping up from the past, and new sparks that could develop into something more. Jabari must figure out how to make time for both his passion for art as well as his passion for finding something or someone meaningful in his life. With the help of his good friends Ky and Jimmy, the trio makes their way through these ups and downs, and we follow them between their mistakes and wins. After a chance meeting with his new apartment neighbor Meadow, Jabari finds himself having strong new feelings and must decide if these feelings are something he wants or needs.

Character Arc(s):

While there are many characters introduced in the show, the main focal points are Jabari and Meadow. Jabari goes through your typical main character journey. Starting off with the main story setting action of his move into Manhattan, he begins his new journey in a new place, surrounded by new people and new experiences. However, with old people, old experiences and old habits creeping in, he has to decide if he wants to embrace his new self or his old self.

Meadow on the same hand being a long-time Manhattan resident still also deals with the same forces of life. While she also has close friend support, her past and her passions differently influence her journey in finding love whilst still pursuing her love for art. The classic story of love and the factors in one’s life that influences love encapsulates the whole movie, and through the characters creates a personal, unique but relatable experience.

Actors:

Entergalactic’s cast is a fairly celebrity loaded one. With the obvious being Kid Cudi as Jabari, it also features Jessica Williams as Meadow, Laura Harrier as Carmen, Timothee Chalamet and Ty Dolla $ign as Jabari’s friends Ky and Jimmy, as well as Vanessa Hudgens, Jaden Smith and Macaulay Culkin. An odd mix of celebrities for sure, however the diverse list perfectly fits the diverse roles played throughout. Kid Cudi has been known for having very specific tastes, and known for his knowledge of pop culture and its trends, and these factors I think are what influenced him in his choosing of the cast for Entergalactic.

Cinematics:

Visually, “Entergalactic” is a piece of art. With super vibrant colors and an almost psychedelic vibe to most scenes, the movie becomes not only an enjoyable watch for the plot, but a visual journey that your eyes will feast on from beginning to end.

If you have ever seen “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, you will be familiar with this type of 3D animation and how smoothly it works for movies like this. Though it has almost a stop-motion animation look to it, the animation is a mix of 2D, 3D and hand-drawn and painted images made to resemble live images. Overall the visuals of this movie drew lots of attention in its early days, and continues to provide inspiring and creative vibes during your watch.

Soundtrack:

The soundtrack to the movie coincides with an album by Kid Cudi by the same name, which features Ty Dolla $ign, 2 Chainz and Don Toliver. Using the classic psychedelic, chill sounds of Kid Cudi, the tracks played throughout the movie really helped exaggerate important plot points. One of my favourite existing reviews that I think perfectly describes this movie is shown below, taken from Letterboxd.
