MAPPA’s Trailer Sharpens the Sci-Fi Edge

To mark the release of the final volume, MAPPA dropped a new promotional trailer that brings the manga’s final pages to life with striking, high-contrast animation. Crunchyroll reports that Shun Miyakawa, a key animator from the original adaptation, directs and storyboards the trailer. His involvement carries over the visual discipline of the original series, while Sota Yamazaki leads character design and chief animation direction, keeping the character work consistent as the setting shifts.

“Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo” unfolds in 2086, long after the main series. The story follows Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu as they navigate a world in which jujutsu has surpassed human limits. When they meet Maru, a humanoid alien with jujutsu-like abilities, the story pivots. It examines how power evolves and who defines it.

The trailer builds tension with sharp visual contrasts, shifting from kinetic action to quiet character beats that give the story room to breathe. MAPPA adapts the manga’s ending into fluid sequences that highlight movement, texture, and scale. The cyber-infused aesthetic gives the spinoff a distinct identity, separating it from the grounded tone of the original timeline.

The manga debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2025 and concluded in March 2026. The final collected volume arrived in Japan on May 1, 2026. The trailer lands as a visual companion to that release, reinforcing the story’s futuristic scope without overshadowing the source material.

The Legacy of “Jujutsu Kaisen”

Before “Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo,” “Jujutsu Kaisen” built its reputation on character-driven storytelling and clear emotional stakes. Created by Gege Akutami, the manga launched in 2018 and quickly gained attention for its pacing and structure.

The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high schooler drawn into curses after finding a powerful object. What begins as survival grows into a conflict driven by sorcerers, ancient forces, and consequences. The series anchors its action in character choices, giving each arc weight.

MAPPA’s adaptation built on that foundation. The studio delivered crisp animation and tight direction. The first season debuted in 2020. “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” explored Yuta Okkotsu’s backstory. Each entry added depth while maintaining clarity across arcs.

“Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo” builds on that foundation but shifts perspective, pointing the narrative forward. New characters and a distant timeline prevent repetition while preserving the emotional core. Themes of connection, loss, and responsibility continue to tie the spinoff back to the original.

That balance defines the spinoff’s impact. It expands the universe while providing a clear stopping point for the story. The final volume and its trailer reinforce this approach, bringing the extended timeline to a close without overextending its scope.
