Adrien Brody and Rachel Zegler to Lead Karim Aïnouz’s Father-Daughter Drama “Last Dance”

A 1991 Caribbean cruise ship is the unlikely backdrop for a father-daughter reckoning. Yet Last Dance weaves intimacy, heartbreak, and music into that world. Adrien Brody and Rachel Zegler lead the drama from director Karim Aïnouz, with Ben Platt joining the cast and writing original songs for the film.

Music, Love, and Loss

According to Playbill, Last Dance follows Elliot, a celebrated Broadway composer played by Brody, who invites his daughter Emma, played by Zegler, on a gay cruise. Emma steps into a world filled with music, freedom, and chosen family. During the trip, she falls for a young crew member as she tries to reconnect with her father.

The AIDS crisis shapes every part of the story. Elliot refuses to confront the reality of his illness, which creates growing tension between him and Emma. The film explores grief, denial, and the emotional gaps families leave unspoken for years.

Aïnouz described the project as a story about resilience during one of the darkest moments in queer history.

“When many were dying of AIDS, there was a sense of solidarity and fury that made us stronger. Last Dance is a universal and urgent tale in which joy is taken up as resilience, and the dance floor becomes a pièce de résistance. It is an honor to collaborate with such exquisite talent to bring this movie to life in a time where, more than ever, we need fables of hope,” Aïnouz said.

The project marks Brody’s first announced movie role since winning his second Academy Award for The Brutalist. Zegler joins the film after her acclaimed stage run in Evita. Platt will co-star and create original music for the movie, with Zegler performing songs written for the project.

Emily Ziff Griffin’s Personal Story Drives the Film

Screenwriter Emily Ziff Griffin based Last Dance on her 2021 New Yorker article, “The Last Dance with My Dad.” The autobiographical piece explored her relationship with her father and the memories that shaped their bond. The article balanced warmth, heartbreak, and reflection without losing sight of the era in which the story unfolds.

That personal foundation gives Last Dance much of its emotional weight. The film focuses on the families, friendships, and communities that lived through it day by day.

The film also arrives with strong industry support. Fifth Season and CAA Media Finance Group will handle domestic rights. Producer Lynette Howell Taylor joins the project through 51 Entertainment.

Last Dance Brings Together an Acclaimed Creative Team

Last Dance combines intimate storytelling with major creative talent. Brody, Zegler, and Platt each bring a different energy to the film, while Aïnouz continues his focus on emotionally grounded stories. The movie also explores queer history through family, music, and memory rather than spectacle. With its mix of music, grief, and queer history, Last Dance already carries unusual emotional weight.
