Marvel fans finally know who will carry Wakanda into its next era. After years of speculation, Marvel Studios has revealed the actor stepping into one of the MCU’s most recognizable roles. The announcement brings a new face to the story while building on everything that came before it.
David Jonsson Takes the Mantle as Marvel’s New Black Panther
Marvel Studios surprised fans during San Diego Comic-Con with one of the convention’s biggest announcements. Director Ryan Coogler confirmed that “Black Panther 3” will arrive in theaters on Dec. 15, 2028. He also revealed that David Jonsson will play the adult son of T’Challa, who first appeared as a child during the closing moments of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
The film follows T’Challa’s son as he comes of age within Wakanda’s royal family. While Marvel has not released plot details beyond that premise, the announcement confirms that the franchise will continue the royal bloodline introduced in the previous film instead of recasting Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa.
According to Deadline, Coogler also shared that “Black Panther 3” will become the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film shot entirely on large-format celluloid film. The format reflects Coogler’s commitment to giving Wakanda a cinematic look unlike any previous MCU film.
Oscar winner Denzel Washington also joins the cast, although Marvel has not revealed his character.
The “Black Panther” franchise remains one of Marvel Studios’ most influential franchises. The original 2018 film earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide and won three Academy Awards. After Boseman died in 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” honored his legacy instead of recasting T’Challa. The sequel earned more than $859 million worldwide and won an Academy Award for Ruth E. Carter’s costume design, making her the first Black woman to win two competitive Oscars.
From “Rye Lane” to Wakanda: Why David Jonsson Stands Out
Stepping into the world of Wakanda means following one of Marvel’s most respected performances. Boseman transformed T’Challa into one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. His death in 2020 left fans around the world mourning the actor and the character he brought to life. Few actors inherit a role as admired as Black Panther. Jonsson now faces the challenge of making it his own while respecting what came before him.
Marvel also chose a different direction than many fans expected. In Marvel Comics, Shuri takes up the Black Panther mantle in one of her most notable storylines after T’Challa. While the MCU established Shuri as Wakanda’s protector in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Black Panther 3” instead shifts its focus. The decision charts a different course while continuing the family story introduced at the end of the previous film.
Jonsson has built an impressive résumé in just a few years. He earned widespread praise for his breakout performance in “Rye Lane.” He followed that with a leading role in HBO’s “Industry” and impressed critics again in “Alien: Romulus,” proving he can command both intimate drama and blockbuster action. He also stars in “The Long Walk,” another performance that showcases his dramatic range and ability to anchor a character-driven story. The role offers another example of why Marvel believed he was the right actor to lead its next chapter.
Before Marvel’s announcement, rumors swirled about John David Washington and Damson Idris as potential successors to the Black Panther mantle. Both actors appeared in fan casting discussions for years. Marvel ultimately chose Jonsson, placing one of the MCU’s most cherished roles in the hands of one of Britain’s fastest-rising stars.
A New Era Begins for Wakanda
For the first time since “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Marvel has a clear path forward for Wakanda. Coogler’s decision to center T’Challa’s son honors the past while opening the door to new stories. With Jonsson leading the cast, Washington joining the ensemble, and an ambitious filmmaking approach already in place, “Black Panther 3” has all the ingredients to become one of Marvel’s most anticipated releases.
