The battlefield is finally moving from the screen in your hands to the big screen. After years of attempts to bring Call of Duty to theaters, a movie is in motion. The franchise has spent more than two decades putting players in the middle of major military conflicts, but a movie brings a different challenge. It has to turn an experience built around player control into a story that works on its own.
The Call of Duty Movie Finds Its Battlefield
The Call of Duty movie finally has a setting. During Fanatics Fest NYC, director and co-writer Peter Berg confirmed in July 2026 that the film will take place in the “Modern Warfare” universe. That puts the movie inside one of the franchise’s most established storylines, giving the adaptation a clear starting point.
The movie will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. Paramount announced the release date during CinemaCon in April, placing the film in the 25th anniversary year of the original Call of Duty, which arrived in 2003.
Paramount has not announced the cast or revealed the movie’s plot. Berg will direct and co-write the screenplay with Taylor Sheridan. David Glasser will produce alongside Berg and Sheridan.
Paramount and Activision first announced their live-action Call of Duty movie in September 2025. Their multiyear agreement also leaves room for the franchise to expand across film and television.
Berg has also said that the film will prioritize authenticity and approach its soldiers on a human level while delivering the large-scale military action that defines the games.
From WWII Shooter to Modern Warfare
Call of Duty started as a World War II game. Infinity Ward developed the original title, which Activision released for PC in October 2003. The game placed players in the roles of American, British, and Russian soldiers and focused on the shared experience of fighting through the war.
The franchise changed direction in 2007. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare moved the series into a contemporary setting and introduced a more modern military thriller approach. The game introduced the new version of Captain John Price, who became central to the Modern Warfare storyline.
That shift opened the door to several different eras and storylines. The series later explored World War II again, the Cold War, and futuristic conflicts. Across those different eras, Call of Duty built a franchise that could move from historical warfare to fictional global conflicts without losing its military focus.
The Big-Screen Mission Begins in 2028
For more than 20 years, Call of Duty has put players behind the controls of its wars. Now, Paramount will ask audiences to sit back and watch one unfold. The Modern Warfare universe gives the movie a proven foundation, while Berg and Sheridan have the chance to build a story that stands apart from the games.
For the first time, Call of Duty has a confirmed place on the big-screen calendar. On June 30, 2028, the franchise will have to make the jump from a game people play to a movie people watch.
