Denzel Washington to Lead Netflix’s Epic as Carthaginian General Hannibal—Fuqua Directs

by Jasmine Franklin

The image alone is hard to ignore. An army moving through the Alps, elephants in tow, with the fate of a campaign hanging in the balance. That moment has defined Hannibal’s legacy for centuries. It is now becoming the foundation for a new film led by Denzel Washington. Paired again with director Antoine Fuqua, the project brings a familiar collaboration into a very different setting.

Inside the “Hannibal” Project

Washington stars in Netflix’s upcoming historical film “Hannibal,” directed by Fuqua. The film centers on Hannibal, the Carthaginian general whose campaign against Rome in the Second Punic War is a landmark in military history.

After a long lull, the film is moving forward. The project has officially moved into pre-production, with filming expected to begin this summer in Italy. According to Variety, production will be based at Cinecittà Studios, with additional location work planned across the country. Pre-production and location scouting are actively underway in Italy, marking a clear shift into physical production planning.

The creative team is coming together: Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, known for visually ambitious films like “The Aviator,” “Kill Bill,” and “Inglourious Basterds,” has joined the project.

The screenplay comes from John Logan, whose work on “Gladiator” and “The Aviator” reflects a balance between character and historical scope. Washington will also produce the film alongside Fuqua, marking another collaboration under Hill District Media’s first-look deal with Netflix.

Netflix has not confirmed a release date or announced additional casting. The production remains in pre-production with key creative roles in place, while ensemble casting and scheduling continue to take shape. Hannibal’s campaign presents a story shaped by calculated risk, political pressure, and the demands of leading in extreme conditions.

A Proven Creative Partnership

Washington and Fuqua have a long professional history. Their first film, “Training Day,” defined both careers, earning Washington an Academy Award and cementing Fuqua’s directorial status.

Their collaboration continued with the “The Equalizer” films, in which Washington shifted into a quieter, more deliberate role. He relied less on dialogue and more on timing and presence. Fuqua matched that approach with tight pacing and controlled action, keeping the focus on character.

Their collaboration now spans six films, including “Hannibal,” reinforcing their status as one of Hollywood’s most consistent actor-director partnerships. That shift could bring the focus onto Hannibal’s decisions in real time, rather than just the legend built around him. Taking on a historical epic brings new challenges but fits their strengths.

The Road Ahead for “Hannibal”

With production underway, “Hannibal” moves from development into execution. The film now enters a phase where its scale will be shaped on set.

For Washington and Fuqua, the project continues a long collaboration built on restraint and a focus on character. That approach now meets a historical setting defined by movement, pressure, and consequence.

From here, the work belongs to the production itself.
