by Jasmine Franklin

Roz’s story is not finished, and DreamWorks Animation is already building its next chapter. The studio has tapped Troy Quane to direct the sequel to “The Wild Robot,” bringing in a filmmaker known for character-driven animation to continue the story. The move reshapes the creative team while keeping key voices in place, setting up a sequel that builds on the original film’s emotional groundwork.

What We Know About ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’

“The Wild Robot” will continue with “The Wild Robot Escapes,” based on the second book in Peter Brown’s trilogy. The story follows Roz and her bird-son Brightbill as they attempt to escape a dairy farm and return to their island.

Quane will take over directing duties from Chris Sanders, who helmed the 2024 film. Sanders will remain involved as the screenwriter, helping guide the story’s tone and continuity, according to TheWrap.

Quane brings experience from across the animation industry. His credits include work on “Enchanted,” “Hotel Transylvania,” “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” “The Peanuts Movie,” and “Ice Age.” He also co-directed “Nimona,” which earned an Oscar nomination after its 2023 revival. That range gives him a strong foundation for a sequel that balances scope with emotional focus.

Heidi Jo Gilbert will serve as co-director. She worked as head of story on the first film and helped shape its emotional clarity. Her previous work includes “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “The Croods: A New Age,” as well as story roles at Disney, Pixar, and Nickelodeon.

Producer Jeff Hermann will return, maintaining continuity behind the scenes. Sanders stepping away from directing follows a familiar pattern in his career, as he has not returned to direct sequels to several of his earlier films.

How ‘The Wild Robot’ Became a Standout

“The Wild Robot,” released in 2024, marked Chris Sanders’ return to feature animation after more than a decade. The film centered on a service robot learning to function beyond its programming, with Lupita Nyong’o voicing Roz. The adaptation expanded the emotional scope of the original book while maintaining its core themes. It explored connection and survival through visual storytelling rather than heavy dialogue.

The film performed both commercially and critically. It earned over $300 million worldwide and picked up three Academy Award nominations, including Best Animated Feature. It also received three BAFTA nominations and won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Animated Feature.

Industry recognition extended across multiple guilds. The film collected nine Annie Awards from ASIFA-Hollywood, four Visual Effects Society awards, and the Producers Guild Award for Best Animated Feature. It also earned widespread recognition from critics’ groups and festivals.
