by Neil Bui

Andrew Chin is a former New York Yankees draft pick whose professional baseball career doesn’t turn out the way one would have liked it to. As a result, he returns home to Boston to his family. His immigrant mother, Carol Chin, is a successful McDonald’s franchisee with multiple restaurants.

Carol is like all moms who want the best for their children and see their best and potential, despite any setbacks in life. For Andrew, she wants to see him take his confidence and dedication on the baseball field into the family business in front of team members and customers. And she can relate to where Andrew is in his life, as she’s seen her own parents uproot themselves from their lives in China to start anew in South America as entrepreneurs as well as she herself being sent to America by her family as a young adult to pursue the American dream.

Just learning about Carol Chin and the sacrifices she’s made as well as the success she’s found, reminds me of “Green Lantern: Legacy”, specifically the line about immigrant journeys “[she] came to a new country and dreamed up a whole new future for her family… I’d say that’s the very definition of creative.”

Synopsis: When his chosen career path as a Major League pitcher doesn’t pan out, former youth baseball standout Andrew Chin sits down for a direct-address conversation with his immigrant mother and McDonald’s franchisee Carol, to learn what it means to start over. As she reflects on the hardships of arriving in a new country and pursuing a new profession, Andrew begins to see how they mirror his own struggles. Inspired by his parents’ path, Andrew strives to channel his own ambition and work ethic away from the mound and into the family business, reframing what success looks like along the way.
