Michael Jackson Biopic Moonwalks to a Record-Breaking Opening Weekend

by Jasmine Franklin

A crowd can still form around a name alone, and Michael Jackson proves that every time. His music still plays across generations, but the story around him keeps shifting. Each wave of attention brings a different lens, shaped by distance, debate, and memory. That tension now plays out in theaters. This release feels like a real-time measure of how audiences want to engage with his legacy today.

A Historic Opening Weekend for “Michael”

Michael” opened to $217 million worldwide, setting a new record for a biographical film, according to The Guardian. The film brought in $97 million across North America and added $120.4 million internationally, pushing it well past early projections.

Those numbers place “Michael” ahead of “Oppenheimer,” which opened to $180.4 million globally, and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which debuted with $124 million worldwide. Domestically, it outpaced “Straight Outta Compton,” which previously set a high mark for music biopics with a $60.2 million opening.

The turnout stands out given the negative criticism from movie critics and widely reported production hurdles. Audience interest did not hinge on critical reception. Instead, the draw centered on the story’s scale and the continued pull of Michael Jackson’s name.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson in the title role. His casting adds a personal layer, as he is Michael Jackson’s nephew. Colman Domingo plays Joe Jackson, while Nia Long portrays Katherine Jackson. The Jackson estate supported the production, shaping how the story appears on screen.

The film has opened across most major markets. Japan remains a key territory, with a release set for June. The delay could extend the film’s global momentum.

“Michael” faced a long road to release, including reported delays and creative revisions. Critics questioned how the film handles key moments. Even so, audiences turned out in large numbers, making the opening a clear commercial success.

A Second Chapter Gains Momentum

The success of the opening weekend has already sparked movement for a follow-up. According to Lionsgate vice chair Adam Fogelson on “The Town With Matt Belloni podcast,” the development for the second film is underway. He said production on a follow-up could begin as early as this year or next, depending on how plans come together.

“There is a massive amount of music, some of his greatest music, and life experiences separate and apart from allegations, a ton of that would fill more than a second movie on its own,” Fogelson told Beloni.

The first film focuses on Michael Jackson’s early rise and defining career moments. A second installment would likely unfold in the later years of his life, when public scrutiny intensified and reshaped his image.

Fuqua is expected to remain involved if the project moves forward, along with key cast members. The studio has not announced a timeline, but early conversations suggest confidence in the film’s performance.

Studios rarely explore multi-part biopics unless there is clear audience demand. In this case, the opening weekend offers a strong signal that viewers are willing to return for more.
