Squid Game: Season 2 Confirmed

by Neil Bui

Netflix has announced its most-watched series ever, Squid Game, has been renewed for a second season.

Director/writer/executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk acknowledged the long road it took to make the worldwide hit.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

Hwang then takes the time to thank the fans for tuning in and giving the series the attention it has received. From there, he gives a hint at what is to come in the second season:

  • The main character, Gi-hun, returns, a win in my book as some fans were predicting a second season would focus on a new cast of participants. As the first season ended, we saw Gi-hun resolve to find out who is putting on the games and put an end to it all. With half of his winnings still available, it’ll be interesting to see how Gi-hun will go about accomplishing this
  • The Front Man returns. At one point, I had thought to myself that winners of the game end up as replacements for the role of the Front Man, which allows for those currently in the role to rotate out. However, with just as much as to find out about the current Front Man and his relationship with his “possibly” dead brother, I’m glad that we’ll be able to find out more about this Front Man in Season 2, which hopefully includes more flashbacks or explanations about how the road taken to where he is now.
  • The man in the suit with ddakji (the train station man with the paper flipping game) might be back. Either this is a tease, or the writers/showrunners really haven’t made a decision or not. Maybe Gi-hun will find him and do some horrible things to get information? But he could also find his way back to the games some other way…
  • Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su, will be introduced. If Young-hee doesn’t sound familiar, then that’s because she is the robot from the first game of Red Light, Green Light which would kill anyone caught moving. It sounds like the games will be changed this time around, which adds to excitement and thrill.

Stay tuned for more coverage on Squid Games Season 2, only on Netflix. #SquidGameS2
