Pamela Voorhees has spent decades living in the shadow of her son’s name. Friday the 13th turned Jason into a horror icon, but the original film began with a mother grieving a child she could not save. Crystal Lake turns the clock back to that tragedy, placing Pamela at the center of a story the franchise has rarely told from her perspective. This time, the story starts with Jason before the hockey mask, the killings, and the legend.
Pamela Voorhees Gets Her Own Nightmare
Crystal Lake premieres on Peacock October 15th. A24 produces the series, which Brad Caleb Kane created and wrote. He also serves as showrunner. The story picks up nearly a year after Jason Voorhees drowns in the lake, with his mother, Pam, struggling to live with the loss of her only child. Then two strangers show up at her door with questions about her past, putting Pam at the center of a mystery that reaches beyond Jason’s death.
Linda Cardellini leads the series as Pam Voorhees. William Catlett plays local police chief Levon Brooks, while Devin Kessler plays his journalist sister, Briana. Cameron Scoggins stars as Officer Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom plays Grace, a fellow camper and friend of Jason. Callum Vinson plays young Jason, with Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik rounding out the recurring cast.
The arrival of the two strangers gives the series a new source of tension. Their questions force the people of Crystal Lake to look at Pam differently. What follows brings buried parts of her past to light and puts the town on edge. The series uses that tension to explore the woman behind one of the “Friday the 13th” franchise’s most important figures.
The Tragedy Behind the Legend
The first Friday the 13th arrived in 1980 and took audiences to Camp Crystal Lake. Sean S. Cunningham directed the film from Victor Miller’s screenplay. Betsy Palmer played Pamela Voorhees, the mother at the center of the story. At the time, Jason Voorhees was not the killer audiences knew.
That changed with Friday the 13th Part 2. The 1981 sequel moved Jason into the spotlight and helped establish the image that would define the franchise. More sequels followed throughout the 1980s, turning Jason into one of horror’s most recognizable villains. The franchise continued through the 1980s before expanding into films such as Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 Friday the 13th.
Pamela Gets the Final Word
Crystal Lake changes the way the franchise approaches its most infamous family. Jason may have become the face of Friday the 13th, but Pamela’s story started the nightmare. By putting her at the center, the series can revisit familiar territory from a perspective the movies rarely explored.
Crystal Lake premieres October 15 on Peacock, with all eight episodes arriving the same day.
