DC Comics: Dark Crisis Will Be 2022’s Major Event

by Neil Bui

The upcoming summer crossover event, Dark Crisis, which begins June 2022, will feature Earth’s remaining heroes uniting to fight off an evil threat that pulls from the iconic history of DC Comics as well as saving the lost Justice League members, while dealing with the complications of some heroes choosing to stay out of this mess.

Incorporating the character of Pariah from 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earth, the sole survivor of his destroyed homeworld has found a way to restore his world and the infinite Multiverse. However, in order to do so, Earth-0 must die.

Using the ancient destructive force of the Great Darkness (first seen in Swamp Thing by Alan Moore and Stan Woch), Pariah will wield it in order to both bring about rebirth and as well wreak vengeance.

The DC website describes the seven-issue event as “not only an epic battle of good versus evil with epic surprises in store..” but also “about showing how heroes relate to each other when faced with the impossible.”

The thematic focus of this crossover will be on legacy, according to series writer Joshua Williamson.

Dark Crisis is an epic DCU event about legacy,” Williamson said. “It will have all the giant, fun cosmic battles and Multiversal set pieces, but it’s not about reboots, retcons, or rewriting time and space.”

This storyline comes at a time where “classic” characters like Nightwing and the original Teen Titans are joined by newer “inheritors” like Jon Kent/Superman, Timothy ‘Jace’ Fox/Batman, and Yara Flor/Wonder Woman. This convergence of characters paves the way for a dynamic we haven’t quite seen before.

“At its core it’s about the characters and the relationships that we’ve seen built over DC’s great history. Dark Crisis spins out of Death of the Justice League and connects all the story threads across the DCU since Infinite Frontier in a major way,” Williamson said. “Unifying the new legacy of the DCU as we honor the classic. You can’t miss it!”

Williamson and artist Daniel Sampere intend on delivering what fans love most about the DCU – generations, sidekicks, and legacies – but with a fresh perspective – new heroes stepping up to deal with a crisis, versus established heroes bearing the responsibility.

“To me, Dark Crisis is a big celebration for all DC fans,” Sampere said. “It’s a huge event full of epic heart, an event that embraces the past while looking to the future. Joshua and I are the biggest DC fans, and this is our love letter to these characters and this universe.”

Personally, what has been said so far about Dark Crisis reminds me of the events in Dark Metal, however this time it’s less about having unshakeable hope from the heroes who remain and more about unyielding responsibility by the heroes who are left to take over.

Prior to the release of the first issue of Dark Crisis, a pair of tie-in issues will be released in May with the first being a Free Comic Book Day Special Edition.
