Toei Animation has announced details of their upcoming project Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, a theatrical continuation of the story of Agumon, Taichi “Tai” Kamiya, and their friends. The film coincides with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Digimon Adventure series and will be released on February 21, 2020.

Kizuna (which means “bond”) is a sequel to the Digimon Adventure tri. film series, which united fans with the 8 Digi-Destined (“Chosen Children” if you’re choosing to stick with the original terminology instead of the dubbed version). The 6 films of tri. were released from 2015 to 2018 and took place after the end of Digimon Adventure 02 (but not the very end, which took viewers to the characters’ adulthoods where they have children and those children have their own Digimon partners).

When we first met Tai and his friends, he was about 10-years-old (just like a certain Pokémon trainer). Fortunately, the Digimon franchise has allowed us to watch our favorite characters grow up and develop over time, just like their partners who Digivolve. But unlike Digivolution and Ash Ketchum that rarely have lasting change, we’ve seen Tai pass along the leadership and goggles to Davis, and determine his own place in the Digital World and Real World as one of the “older kids.”

Now 20 years later, we can watch Tai step into adulthood in Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.
