Yoko Taro is Bringing Us A New ‘Evangelion’ Anime Series

by Jasmine Franklin

“Evangelion” is not finished evolving. Three decades after its debut, the franchise is opening a new chapter with a different kind of storyteller at the center. A new writer has joined the anime series, bringing his distinct approach to narrative structure and character psychology into a world that has already been reimagined more than once.

A 30th Anniversary Reimagining Takes Shape

The announcement arrived during the “EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION” event in Yokohama. A new anime series in the “Evangelion” franchise now moves forward in production, backed by Studio Khara and CloverWorks, according to Crunchyroll.

The creative team brings together voices tied closely to the franchise’s modern era. Kazuya Tsurumaki leads the project. He directed the “Rebuild of Evangelion” films and recently worked on “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.” He shares directing duties with Toko Yatabe, who worked on “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.”

The project also brings in Yoko Taro for scriptwriting and series composition. His work on the “NieR” series leans into existential questions and fractured narratives, which align naturally with “Evangelion’s” tone. His involvement suggests a story that may push deeper into psychological and philosophical territory rather than revisit familiar ground.

Music also plays a key role in shaping “Evangelion’s” atmosphere. Keiichi Okabe, another “NieR” collaborator, will compose the score. His work often blends haunting melodies with emotional restraint, which could reshape how this new series feels moment to moment.

Shortly after the announcement, Studio Khara released a video through its official YouTube channel. It previews the tone while keeping details to a minimum.

The Legacy Behind ‘Evangelion’

To understand the weight of this new series, you have to look at where “Evangelion” began. “Neon Genesis Evangelion” first aired in 1995 and was directed by Hideaki Anno. The series ran for 26 episodes and quickly stood apart from other mecha anime. It focused less on spectacle and more on the fragile inner lives of its characters.

The story continued in 1997 with two films, “Death & Rebirth” and “The End of ‘Evangelion.'” These projects reworked and expanded the original narrative, offering a more direct and often harsher conclusion.

Years later, the franchise returned in a new form. Studio Khara launched the “Rebuild of Evangelion” film series in 2007. These films retold the original story while introducing new elements and visual updates. The final installment, “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” arrived in 2021 and closed that chapter.

Across each version, the franchise evolved without losing its core identity. It remained a story about human connection under pressure. It examined how people respond to fear, isolation, and responsibility.

Now, with a new series in development, the franchise enters another phase. This time, it does so with a creative team willing to reinterpret its foundation rather than repeat it.

What do you want this new “Evangelion” series to explore next?
