Project Hail Mary: Ryan Gosling Heads into Space without a Star Wars Starfighter

by Andrew Nguyen

Based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary is an upcoming American science fiction adventure film produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard, starring Ryan Gosling, who is also credited as a producer on this film. Gosling plays astronaut Ryland Grace who awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of himself or his mission. He slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth.

The first time I watched this trailer I was so curious to find out more and leaned over to my wife to say “I want to watch that”. I loved how the trailer also didn’t give too much away especially as I have not read the book which makes it even better! It seemed like a mix of the Martian, Alien, and Interstellar all wrapped up into one along with having one of my personal favorite actors leading the charge with a mix of drama and comedy in his performance.

Within the trailer, you see that this film is based on a novel that was written by Andy Weir who wrote The Martian as well. In my opinion, The Martian is one of the best films regarding space exploration. I thoroughly enjoyed that film because it was a blend of serious moments but also delivered some comedic moments that never took away from the seriousness of the overall plot.

This film will be produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The project will be the first time they will be directing in 12 years since 22 Jump Street

Andy Weir himself also wanted to wait to get Drew Goddard on board given his extensive background working on television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and a little indie one called Lost

But of course, with a strong production team, you also need someone who can help carry this film as an amazing lead actor and I can’t think of anyone who can do that other than Ryan Gosling. Although most of us may be familiar with Ryan’s comedic chops in the Barbie movie, there is also the Nice Guys where his comedic timing and chemistry with Russell Crowe makes it so laugh out loud funny. Now only time will tell how this movie will pan out but from the production team’s enthusiasm as well as the involvement of the author, I am definitely excited to see Project Hail Mary!
