For a generation that anticipated the Scholastic Book Fairs and the debate over which animal they would morph into first, the return of “Animorphs” feels personal. The series once lived in school libraries, sleepover conversations, and late-night page turning under the covers. Now it is stepping back into the spotlight with a new creative team and a modern streaming home. Early details suggest the story is not simply a return to nostalgia but rather a new one for a new audience ready to encounter it for the first time. The project already brings together major names behind the camera, signaling serious expectations for the adaptation.

Early Development Brings Ryan Coogler and Proximity Media Into the Fold

Variety reports that an “Animorphs” TV series is in early development at Disney+, with writer Bayan Wolcott attached to adapt and executive produce. Ryan Coogler joins as executive producer through his Proximity Media banner, alongside Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler. At the same time, Scholastic, the original publisher, participates as well through executive producers Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman. 20th Television is the studio behind the adaptation.

Proximity Media’s Simone Harris and Dezi Gallegos oversee television development for the project. The official logline describes the series as follows: teenagers who uncover a hidden alien threat while managing everyday life, including school pressure, relationships, and strict curfews.

Coogler’s involvement continues his broader television partnership with Disney. He currently works under an overall deal with the company, which includes a pilot for a reboot of “The X-Files” starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. His film work also keeps him in the spotlight after his recent success with “Sinners,” which earned four Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler.

Disney+ continues expanding its YA and book adaptation slate. The platform streams “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” now moving into its third season, and is developing a live-action “Eragon” series. It also previously adapted R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” books into a two-season run, showing its ongoing commitment to the genre.

The Legacy of the “Animorphs” Books Still Hits Home

The original “Animorphs book series was written by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. The story followed five teenagers, Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias, who discovered that Earth was facing a secret invasion by parasitic aliens known as Yeerks. The group meets a dying Andalite alien, part of a race already fighting the Yeerks across the galaxy. Before dying, the Andalite grants the teens the ability to morph into any animal they physically touch, using DNA absorption.

That ability turns the group into a hidden resistance force as they fight the Yeerks while trying to survive school, family expectations, and the emotional weight of a war no one else sees. As the series progresses, they gain a new ally, Ax, a young Andalite stranded on Earth.

The book series ran for 54 main novels from 1996 to 2001, starting with “The Invasion” and ending with “The Beginning.” Each installment rotated narration among the main characters, giving readers shifting perspectives on fear, loyalty, and survival. Companion titles like “The Hork-Bajir Chronicles,” “The Andalite Chronicles,” and Visser expanded the universe. The franchise has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, securing its place in YA science fiction history.

A Familiar Story Reimagined for a New Era

With a high-profile production team and an established fan base, “Animorphs” enters development with momentum. The series now sits at the intersection of legacy storytelling and Disney+’s strategy for modern YA adaptations.
