Super/Natural: Nature Being Powerful and Personified

by Neil Bui

National Geographic has a new series exclusively on Disney+, that premieres today, Super/Natural. Executive produced by James Cameron and narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, the series reveals the secret powers and super senses of the world’s most extraordinary animals.

One of the creatures featured in the first episode (“Strange Relations”) is the northern goshawk, known to some as the phantom of the forest. Its speed is second to know as it is able to go from 0 to 40 mph in just a second, giving it the fastest acceleration of any bird of prey. The camerawork showcases this animal’s amazing abilities through incredible angles and shots that work to tell a story in nature, of predator and prey, action and reaction, survival and collaboration.

The second episode continues this journey of discovery, this time around focusing on the behavior of the animal and the rules of engagement when it comes to the mating game. Be forewarned, however, that the episode does reach a certain level of violence within nature as viewers will witness the bloody clashes of elephant seals known as beachmasters.

Overall, Super/Natural provides really detailed glimpses into different ecosystems of animals out in nature.

Not only is the series a scientific look at the physical abilities of various animal species, but it is also narrative-driven personification of these animals much, in part due to the narration by Benedict Cumberbatch.
