What’s New: Avatar, Dune, Problemista, Crisis on Infinite Earths

by Neil Bui

Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, DUNE: PART TWO, Problemista, and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2.

  1. Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender: Official Trailer Debut

Now this is how you adapt Avatar: The Last Airbender. Sorry to throw shade at the last one, I usual express pure criticism for creative works, but when it comes to adaptations of beloved characters and stories, there is a standard to uphold which is something Netflix has done this time around by striving to honor the source material while bringing together a quality cast, and putting in the work to bring another world to life. Take for instance, Arden Cho who looks completely transformed in her role as the bounty hunter June.

Release Date: On Netflix on February 22, 2024

Synopsis: A young boy known as the Avatar must master the four elemental powers to save a world at war – and fight a ruthless enemy bent on stopping him.

  1. DUNE: PART TWO: Poster

The new poster for DUNE: PART TWO features Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya as their characters, Paul Atreides and Chani, move forward together with the bright sun at their backs.

Release Date: In theaters on March 1, 2024

Synopsis: “Dune: Part Two” will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

  1. Problemista: New Promo

In this wacky promo video for Problemista, the writer/director/star of the film, Julio Torres, attempts to have a conversation with his costar Tilda Swinton, but there’s some issues getting a hold of her while the camera moves around to show viewers more of this eccentric setting, likely a hint of what the film will showcase.

Release Date: In select theaters March 1, in theaters everywhere March 22

Synopsis: Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.

  1. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2: Teaser

I love seeing canon and mythology evolve over time and reinventing itself as well as combining the old with the new, which is what the teaser for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2 does by revealing the inclusion of Batman Beyond in this adaptation from a major comic book crossover from the 1980s, whereas Batman Beyond debuted in 1999.

Release Date: TBA, Early 2024

Synopsis: With countless lives at stake, Supergirl takes action to save the multiverse in the powerful second chapter of DC’s animated epic. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two is coming soon!
