What’s New: Monster, Squid Game IRL, The Color Purple, KADOKAWA at Anime Expo

Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Monster, Squid Game: The Trials, The Color Purple, and KADOKAWA Animation’s recap video from this year’s Anime Expo.

  1. Monster: Trailer Released

Director Hirokazu Kore-eda is back with another Japanese film after the international success of 2018’s Shoplifters. This time around he is directing Monster which is the first film since 1995 that he did not write. Another iconic work that he is known for is 2004’s Nobody Knows which earned Yuya Yagira the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. In the hands of Kore-eda, this is sure to be a thrilling story with twists and turns as he takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster.

Release Date: Opening in New York on November 22, 2023 and Los Angeles on December 1, 2023 (expanding to additional markets in December)

Synopsis: When her young son Minato starts to behave strangely, his mother feels that there is something wrong. Discovering that a teacher is responsible, she storms into the school demanding to know what’s going on. But as the story unfolds through the eyes of the mother, teacher and child, the truth gradually emerges.

  1. Squid Game: The Trials Opens December 2023

For fans of Squid Games who have wanted to partake in the activities, the newest immersive experience by Netflix provides just that and opens in Los Angeles on December 6. Tickets start at $39 and can be booked at squidgamesthetrials.com. Tickets are open to the public starting today.

  1. The Color Purple: Second Trailer

Release Date: In theaters December 25, 2023

Synopsis: We are here! The new trailer for #TheColorPurple has ARRIVED. Share your excitement using #PurpleLove. Only in theaters Christmas Day.

Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond in “The Color Purple.” This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule, a multi-medium artist whose breakout first feature is the highly acclaimed “The Burial of Kojo.”  The film’s all-star producers are Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.

KADOKAWA Animation held a booth and did several panels at this year’s Anime Expo, along with autograph sessions, screening events, and collaboration café nearby.
