Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, TV, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on The Ribbon Hero, The Birthday Party, The End of Oak Street, and The Wrong Girls.
- The Ribbon Hero – Trailer
The legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy) is having another one of his classic works, Princess Knight, adapted as a film, The Ribbon Hero. The source material is one of the first in its genre to portray a female hero and started a tradition of androgynous-like heroines as well as other trends in shōjo manga.
Release Date: On Netflix on August 8, 2026
Synopsis: Inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s classic “Princess Knight,” THE RIBBON HERO follows Sapphire as she overcomes loss and trauma to protect those she holds dear.
- The Birthday Party – Trailer
The Birthday Party stars one of my favorite actors, Willem Dafoe, as a father in the 1970s hosting a birthday for his daughter Sofia. After seeing him as Norman Osborn and Godwin Baxter, this man has so much range, especially when it comes to fathers. I’m excited to see how his portrayal as Marcos turns out.
Release Date: In theaters on August 14, 2026
Synopsis: The story is set in the late 1970s somewhere in the Mediterranean, where Marcos Timoleon, an Aristotle Onassis-like tycoon, is throwing a lavish, extravagant birthday party for Sofia, his daughter and sole heiress, on his exclusive private island. The party is a perfect excuse for various people in his life to approach him with their own agendas. But Marcos, who is used to ruthlessly controlling everything and everyone around him at whatever cost, is also secretly plotting a big decision on his daughter’s behalf. Sofia, however, has come to share some important news of her own. As guests start pouring in and night falls, the party grows rowdier and more decadent, while the inevitable clash between Marcos and Sofia reaches a heartbreaking climax.
- The End of Oak Street – Trailer
The End of Oak Street stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery as a suburban family who suddenly find themselves and their neighborhood suddenly out of place if not out of time as they discover prehistoric creatures that they must survive against.
Release Date: In theaters on August 14, 2026
Synopsis: After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.
- The Wrong Girls – Trailer
Described by the lead actress of the film (and spouse of the director), Kristin Stewart, as a “stoner girl comedy”, The Wrong Girls is the directorial debut of Dylan Meyer, daughter of director and writer Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country). The film also starsSeth Rogen who is listed as a producer for the film which feels appropriate as the film feels like a spiritual successor to Pineapple Express based on the trailer.
Release Date: In theaters on August 14, 2026
Synopsis: Two codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck, and bong rip to bong rip, get caught up in a case of mistaken identity that throws their lives into chaos.
