For nearly a century, Betty Boop has remained one of animation’s most recognizable faces. Her signature curls, playful charm, and Jazz Age style continue to influence fashion, entertainment, and pop culture. Now, one of television’s most celebrated storytellers steps into the project in a new way. Brunson’s latest project reimagines Betty Boop through the story behind her creation.
Quinta Brunson Reimagines the Story Behind Betty Boop
Brunson will develop and star in a new feature film centered on Betty Boop, marking the character’s first starring theatrical film since the 1930s, when the character appeared in theatrical shorts. According to Variety, Brunson will produce the project through her company, Fifth Chance Productions. She will also work alongside Fleischer Studios and Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer.
Instead of telling a traditional live-action adaptation, the film will focus on Betty Boop’s creation and evolution through the creator’s perspective. The story will examine the relationship between an artist and his creation while exploring the creative and commercial demands that came with building one of animation’s first global stars.
Brunson said she saw an opportunity to tell a deeper story after meeting with Fleischer and learning more about the character’s history.
“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow remains pleasantly niche,” Brunson said.
“She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century. After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much deeper story to tell,” she added.
Brunson brings an impressive résumé to the project. Through “Abbott Elementary,” she became the first solo Black woman to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. She later became the first Black woman since 1981 to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Those achievements make her an especially compelling storyteller to revisit one of animation’s most enduring icons.
For now, the film remains in development, and the creative team has not announced a director or release date.
The Black Cultural Roots of Betty Boop
Fleischer introduced Betty Boop in 1930 through the “Talkartoons” animated shorts before she evolved into the flapper audiences recognize today. During her original run, she appeared in more than 100 cartoons and became one of animation’s earliest female superstars.
Betty Boop’s history also reflects the influence of Black performers during the Harlem Renaissance. Historians have long pointed to Harlem entertainer Esther “Baby Esther” Jones as a key inspiration for Betty’s signature vocal style. Jones became known for her playful scat singing, including the “boop-boop-a-doop” sounds that later became synonymous with the animated character. Betty Boop cartoons also embraced jazz culture by featuring legendary musicians such as Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong, reinforcing the character’s ties to one of the most influential periods in American music.
Over the decades, Betty Boop’s reach expanded far beyond the screen. The character inspired fashion collections, beauty products, collectibles, and global licensing partnerships, keeping her relevant across generations. More recently, she returned to the stage through the Broadway musical “BOOP!,” introducing the character to new audiences.
A New Chapter for a Timeless Icon
Brunson reframes the project by focusing less on nostalgia and more on origin, authorship, and legacy. Rather than simply revisiting a classic cartoon character, the film centers the creative relationship that brought Betty Boop to life. With Brunson at the center, the project repositions a century-old icon for a modern audience.
