Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, TV, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on Matchbox The Movie, Animals, Fjord, and Street Fighter.
- Matchbox The Movie – Trailer
After the success of Barbie, it’s no surprise Mattel is taking their toys to Hollywood. This time in Matchbox The Movie, the toys were played by a group of friends who called themselves the Matchbox Gang. John Cena plays the leader of this gang and is now a CIA agent in his adulthood, who ends up getting his childhood friends involved in his latest mission gone wrong. It feels like The Fast & The Furious meets Mission: Impossible with cars, explosions, secret agents, espionage, and family friendship.
Release Date: On Apple TV on October 9, 2026
Synopsis: A group of friends since childhood have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean, their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.
- Animals – Teaser
After The Rip, Ben Affleck and Steven Yeun are teaming up again in Animals. I just hope Steven isn’t playing another villain or character with a twist again, since it likely won’t end well for the bad guys.
Release Date: In select theaters and on Netflix on October 9, 2026
Synopsis: When their son is kidnapped, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife find themselves drawn into a web of deception. As they scramble to raise the ransom payment, they’re forced to make choices that could tear their world apart.
- Fjord – Trailer
Awarded the highest prize of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Fjord is Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu’s latest film and his second Palme d’Or. His films tend to explore Romania’s contemporary society and politics and this film looks to focus on the experience of religious conservatism in a progressive environment, and is inspired by the true story of the Bondnariu family whose children were forcefully taken away. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve who were in A Different Man together, and Reinsve was also in this year’s Backrooms.
Release Date: In theaters on October 9, 2026
Synopsis: A Norwegian woman and her devout Romanian husband relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit, coastal town. Their teenage children form a fast bond with a neighboring family as unease begins to simmer around their rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, they are forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the line between concern and prejudice.
- Street Fighter – Trailer
The new trailer for Street Fighter highlights the strained brotherhood between Ryu and Ken, but also the over-the-top ridiculousness such as fighting in a sauna with nothing but towels on. The film is not afraid to have fun with everything the franchise has to offer. And you have to love this use of the unreleased version of “Ambitionz az a Ridah”, by Tupak Shakur created for Mike Tyson in the 1990s that includes “street fighter/fightah” as lyrics.
Release Date: In theaters on October 16, 2026
Synopsis: Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!
