What’s New: The Archies, Gyeongseong Creature, What If…? Season 2, Pokémon Concierge

by Neil Bui

Pop culture is a never-ending world of updates, teases, trailers, and hopefully releases. What’s New Wednesday is Dorkaholics’ way to keep us all up to date with what’s new across comics, tv, film, games, and more! This week, the focus is on The Archies, Gyeongseong Creature, What If…? Season 2, and Pokémon Concierge.

  1. The Archies: Trailer Release

My first thought after watching the trailer for The Archies is that mid-century America isn’t just a time and place but an entire aesthetic or vibe that one can adopt for a creative work. Being set in the familiarly named town of Riverdale but during 1960s India, the tiebacks to the Archie franchise is arguably unavoidable for this film, especially upon hearing the names of the main characters.

Release Date: December 7, 2023 on Netflix

Synopsis: Set in 1960’s India in the fictional hill station town called Riverdale, The Archies is a coming-of-age musical following the lives of the town’s favorite set of teenagers –  Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie, Ethel and Dilton. Seen through the lens of the unique Anglo-Indian community, The Archies explores friendship, freedom, love, heartbreak and rebellion.

  1. Gyeongseong Creature: Date Announcement

In a short promotional video, Netflix announced the premiere dates for Part 1 and Part 2 of the upcoming Korean monster series, Gyeongseong Creature. The cast is led by Park Seo-jun, who appeared in The Marvels, and Han So-hee, who starred in My Name and the music video for BTS Jung Kook’s “Seven.” When it comes to Korean series with monstrous creatures, Sweet Home is the first one that comes to mind, so I’m excited for the release of Gyeongseong Creature to introduce the elements of this genre but in a more historic time such as 1945.

Release Date: Part 1 (first seven episodes) on December 22, 2023, Part 2 (last three episodes) on January 5, 2024

Synopsis: In the spring of 1945 at the mysterious Ongseong Hospital in Gyeongseong, an entrepreneur and a sleuth fight for survival and face a creature born from human greed.

  1. What If…? Season 2: Trailer Drop

In a winter treat for us all, Marvel will be releasing one new episode of What If…? Season 2 each night for nine consecutive nights starting on December 22, 2023. Is anyone getting Fast and Furious vibes from a specific part of the trailer?

Release Date: December 22, 2023 on Disney+

Synopsis: Season 2 of What If…? continues the journey as The Watcher guides viewers through the vast multiverse, introducing brand new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles. Featuring fan-favorite characters this season like Nebula, Hela and Happy Hogan, episodes are directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews with executive producer AC Bradley as head writer.

  1. Pokémon Concierge: Trailer Premiere

In the first-ever collaborative production between Netflix and The Pokémon Company comes Pokémon Concierge, an ambitious stop-motion project crafted by dwarf studios. Karen Fukuhara (The Boys, The Boy and the Heron, Suicide Squad) stars as Haru the titular concierge at the Pokémon Resort who learns just how similar and difficult understanding Pokémon is to understanding humans.

Release Date: December 28, 2023 on Netflix

Synopsis: Set at a resort for Pokémon on a southern island, this is the story of a new concierge named Haru, who gradually discovers herself as she and her fellow staff members scramble to attend to the various Pokémon guests.
