New reports suggest Marvel’s search is already underway. If the reports prove accurate, the decision could shape how the X-Men enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ryan Coogler Reportedly Helps Shape Marvel’s Search for Storm
Marvel has not officially announced who will play Storm, but several insider reports suggest the search has begun. According to industry scooper Main Middle Man, Coogler is reportedly involved in casting the character for “Black Panther 3.” If accurate, the film could introduce Storm before Marvel’s planned “X-Men” reboot reaches theaters.
The reported release schedule also supports that possibility. “Black Panther 3” is expected to arrive in December 2028, while Marvel has targeted 2028 for its upcoming “X-Men” film. Marvel Studios has introduced major characters this way before. Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther first appeared in “Captain America: Civil War” before leading his own film.
None of these reports have received official confirmation from Marvel Studios. Until the studio announces casting, Storm’s involvement in “Black Panther 3” remains unconfirmed. Even so, multiple reports point toward Marvel building its mutant roster one character at a time before assembling the X-Men on screen.
Why Storm Naturally Fits Into Wakanda’s Story
Storm, also known as Ororo Munroe, ranks among Marvel’s most important mutants. Created by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, she first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975. Born to a Kenyan princess and an American photojournalist, Ororo eventually developed the ability to control weather on a global scale.
Storm’s ties to Wakanda extend far beyond geography. In Marvel Comics, Storm and T’Challa share one of the franchise’s most recognizable relationships. The two eventually marry, making Storm queen of Wakanda for a time before later storylines dissolved the marriage. Their history gives Marvel an established foundation if the studio chooses to introduce her through the Black Panther franchise instead of waiting for an ensemble X-Men film.
Several actresses have surfaced in casting speculation. Recent reports have linked Jodie Turner-Smith, Anna Diop, KiKi Layne, Cynthia Erivo and Jayme Lawson to the role. Lawson has drawn additional attention because she previously worked with Coogler on “Sinners,” although Marvel has not commented on any of the rumored names.
Storm’s MCU Arrival Could Shape Marvel’s Next Phase
Storm has remained one of Marvel’s most influential heroes for decades. Her eventual arrival would introduce another cornerstone of the X-Men while expanding Wakanda’s place in the MCU. If Marvel chooses to debut her in “Black Panther 3,” the move would create a natural bridge between two of the franchise’s most important stories.
